Autumn 2018

I don’t know how to tell you this…

…Autumn is on the way. I know. Could this year go any quicker? Sorry to bring the crushing reality around to those who are die-hard Summer fanatics, but I myself could not be more excited. Autumn is by far my favourite season, for the simple reason that I adore the fashion influenced by this time of the year. We more frequently get those crisp blue skied, albeit slightly chilly days “not to warm the flesh, but solely to please the eye” as declared by Nabokov. More importantly meaning; coats! Jackets! LAYERS!!

And studying the catwalks right now, it seems we are in for a treat. Whilst there are most certainly trends, they seem to range widely from minimal monochrome, to ‘bougie’ prints, meaning those on a budget will be likely able to up-cycle some garments. Generally, expect lots of bold and eye-catching looks, rooted around clashing prints, as well as the more monochromatic classic rusted colours, styled upon layers and layers. For now, here is my simple and straightforward breakdown of trends to look out for this season.

PRINT
The rule seems to be “if its got a print on it, its ‘in’”. No, really. When mastering this trend, think oh-so-chic-granny. Silks and satins in dreamy prints will make a perfect statement piece with otherwise simpler outfits, or if you're feeling brave, go 'Clash of the Two-Piece', mixing patterned garments. Safari style will especially be gaining you some fashion points, with snake, leopard and zebra sure to be one of the biggest collections of print to hit the shops.

For those wanting to dip their toes into the trend in a more subtle approach, try classic heritage prints such as houndstooth, tweed, or tartan. This may also be a way you can comfortably showcase the trend at the workplace, whilst staying in check with any potential dress codes. This tiny houndstooth suit beautifully makes the most of this trend, incorporating tailoring, the effect of layering, and print into one stylish look.

LAYERING
Perhaps the most weather appropriate trend for this coming season would be layering. Which is quite possibly the most purse friendly, with it being likely you too can achieve this look with items already in your wardrobe. When layering, it is important to consider two things; texture, and tones. Firstly, pairing thicker and bulkier knits with smooth, silky fabrics creates the perfect juxtaposition to nail this trend. This look by Roksanda is a perfect example, and also encompasses the technique of incorporating different tones of a colour palette/shade to build depth to the look.

TAILORING
A tricker trend to manage whilst remaining purse friendly, tailoring is proving massive this season, with suits ranging from high street to designer. I would suggest the easiest and most subtle way to approach it would be investing in one versatile piece, that can by easily worn and interchanged. A crisp blazer in one solid colour, or in a statement print, would be an excellent way of incorporating this trend into your wardrobe. If you aren't a fan of blazers, try the matching trouser with a simple tee or roll-neck. This look by Alexander McQueen is probably my absolute favourite, with the sleek leather jacket layered over the crisp white skirt suit, creating the perfect soft-grunge.

50 SHADES OF BROWN
The suggested 'colour of the season': if I can say one thing, it is to get yourself a good, brown garment! it seems like for the last few years black has been the go to colour in regards to jackets, coats, leather and boots, but I'm here to tell you- brown is best (okay... this season). Switch out the 'three B's' (bags, belts and boots) for a rich tan to effortlessly nod to this trend, or if you're feeling more daring, layer and look for prints, as perfectly excited in this look by Rochas. I especially love the pop of colour introduced by the deep yellow turtle neck, brightening and bringing an element of youth to the look.

So there we have it, the top trends of Autumn/Winter 2018. Remember, you do not have to blow your wages on a whole new wardrobe to align with the trends, rather invest your money in key, well made pieces that although are in season, can be worn timelessly. Happy Autumn!!
